Understanding Low-Limit Texas Holdem
We have to understand Texas Holdem from its simplest form. Then we begin to see the beauty of limit and no-limit poker.
No-limit texas holdem allows players to bet all-in anytime in the game. This means players can bet all their chips at any one time. Limit Texas Holdem has limits on the amount a player may bet in a game. In limit Texas Holdem betting is not too risky.
The aim is to compose the highest poker hand rank possible with the two cards dealt us plus any three on the board. In betting, we have different structures. An example is the low-limit bet structure of $2/4, which means there should be four betting rounds. Bets are pegged at $2 the first two rounds, and pegged at $4 the last two rounds.
Before dealing two cards bets called the blind are posted. The player left of the dealer makes a "small" blind. This is half our minimum bet which is $2. So the small blind is $1. Next player, left of the small blind, is the big blind. Big blind posts a minimum bet--$2—the big blind bet. This set up rotates so that each player will have a turn being small or big blind and dealer.
Then two cards each are dealt, face down. Small blind gets the first, dealer gets the last. Betting round starts. Player left of the big blind calls the blind bet with $2. The first player can also raise the big blind at once with $4, or else fold, depending on the hand. Other players bet, up to the small blind. All players must wait for their turn before acting. The small blind may place $1 to call the bet—a dollar was bet earlier. Finally, the big blind acts last, raising if no one has yet raised, or merely check.
When all have bet, first round of bets ends. The flop—three cards opened on the table or board—is shown as community cards. They can be used by any player. Then a second bet round of bets starts. First to act is the player left of the dealer. Minimum bet is still $2. After the bets, the flop is again turned—3 cards. A fourth card is turned face up—the "Turn"—and a fresh round of betting—this time a $4 minimum—begins.
Then the game reaches to the river and showdown, although at any point a winner may emerge. This is how limit Texas Holdem is played.
