Allowable Raise Frequency in Limit Poker

Often referred to as "fixed," limit poker is specific with its bet limits. The only option we have here is to decide whether or not to bet. Bet amounts cannot be tampered with as the rules present them. Bets can be doubled, though. We call them big or high bets.

In a limit poker game of $5 over $10, for instance, bets are limited to $5 the first two betting rounds and $10 in the next two. Here, the initial $5 is doubled during the third and fourth betting rounds. These are raise bets, not really bet totals for each round. So in effect, we may decide to bet $5, and someone else may raise that with $5, and then we re-raise by another $5. Here the total raise bets is $15, and this may still increase, depending on the play. In limit poker, we have the potential to win big pots though there are fixed limits on the bets.

Lots of fixed limit poker variants have strict allowable number of raises per betting round. Maximum raise frequency is different in each casino, depending on the thrust of a casino. Some casinos do not readily make the fixed raise limit known to players for certain reasons. Generally, the raise limits involves a first bet and three decisions to raise, or any one bet plus four decisions to raise.

So, for instance, in a $5 per $10 table limit where the raise limit is one bet plus three raises, and there are three other players in a $5 bet round, we may have something like this: let's say play A deiced to bet $5. Then player B follows with his bet and raises with a $5 on his bet, to play a total of $10. Then player C makes his bet and raises it with $5, to play a total of $15. Player A then makes a final bet. If they should decide to call, players B and C may only call A's last bet. They are not allowed to raise again—the betting has been fixed to that limit.

However, playing heads up is different. When betting round starts and there are only two players in the hand (others have folded, for instance), they may go on re-raising one another until one of them decided to bet all-in. Some casinos allow this with their limit poker.

How many raises we are allowed depends on the general limit poker rules and the rules of a casino.
